School Site Updates

The Boys and Girls Club of LeFlore County (BCGCLC) are doing some great things with kids across the county. Club members in Arkoma have the opportunity to attend Archery classes and practice shooting in the Afterschool Program which is funded by the 21st Century Grant Program. Not only are they practicing but they are competing with others schools as well. On February 29, the team from Arkoma attended the Region 4 National Archery in the Schools Shoot at the Southeast Expo Center in McAlester. Madison O’ Neal, a fifth grader placed fifth with a score of 238. Skyla Paul placed 3rd with a score of 245. These two girls competed in the Elementary Division against 200 other 4th through 6th grade girls. These two girls will be competing in the State shoot on March 28th in Oklahoma City.

Our Heavener unit is staying busy and having fun with some educational projects. The 2nd and 3rd graders are making lap quilts with the help of volunteers from the community and are also learning some songs from the Music Director, Matt Houston. The 4th through 8th grade are learning leadership skills from Mrs. Sabrina Dyer as well as learning to make “Smart Moves” with Mrs. Huddleston. The Boy Scouts, under the direction of Mr. Cash, has been added to the after-school program for grades 1st through 8th and are racing their cars they made on Tuesday. The kindergarten and 1st grades are doing an art project with Mrs. Ardemagni. State Representative James Lockhart also stopped by and did a science experiment with the kids, making Mountain Dew (soft drink) glow in the dark.

Bruce Gillham, the site director for Shady Point, reported “we are starting “egg drops.” The kids make a container to protect eggs, and then dropped them to see which eggs survived. Poteau offers “Smart Moves” and “Triple Play.”  All of these projects are made possible because of a community that cares about kids and understands that kids are the future leaders of tomorrow. If you are interested in sharing a talent, volunteering or making a monetary donation please contact the office at 918.647.7136.
